I love savoury scones. And when in the bakery section of the supermarkets on can hardly find the savoury ones. Here I have this recipe from a very old recipe book. It is simple and easy to make. they are perfect for any time of the day. You can use fried bacon bits, finely chopped cooked chicken or sweet corn kernels instead of ham.
Makes 8 wedges
Time: 35-40 minutes
2 cups plain flour
1 tbs sugar
1 tbs baking powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder or 2 cloves grated fresh garlic
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter cubed
3/4 cup buttermilk ( 3/4 cup milk+ 1 tsp vinegar) at room temperature
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/2 cup finely diced ham
2 tbs chopped chives/spring onions/parsley
Method
First, preheat the oven at 200-220'C.
Line a baking tray with a greaseproof paper.
In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, garlic, butter and baking powder to a fine breadcrumb texture.
Then add the grated cheese nad diced ham with chives.
With light hands knead the dough so that you bring the mix together into a ball. Flatten the ball slowly using your hands on the prepared baking tray as seen in the picture below.
Divide the flattened dough into 8 equal wedges. Slightly separate them so that there is little space for them to expand.
Bake the scones in the preheated oven for 20 minutes till the tops are browned and firm to touch.
Serve them warm or cool. You can also serve these scones with soups.
