MIDWEST STEAK AND PEPPERS

A sweet and spicy gravy with pepper steak served with mashed potatoes is totally comfort food. I like making this when it's raining. The sound of the rain, the smell of the wet garden and a bowl of this delicious food just makes me happy.

Serves 4
Time: 35-40 minutes

500 grms beef strips
1 big or 2 small green bell peppers sliced thinly
1 medium onion sliced
2 garlic cloves minced
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 light soy sauce  DO NOT ADD DARK SOY SAUCE
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tbs olive oil
A few pinches red chilli flakes
2 tsp corn flour

Method

First, combine honey, vinegar, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Separate 1/4 cup of this sauce to marinate the beef strips and keep aside the remaining sauce.

Heat 1 tbs of oil in a wok or an open pan, stir fry the beef strips on high heat till changed in colour, then remove and in the same wok add the other half tbs of oil and stir fry the onions and garlic, till slightly golden at the edges.

To this add the sliced peppers. Keep on stir frying for about 3 minutes on high heat. Toss the beef strips in and let it cook for a minute or two.

In the meantime, make the sauce by mixing the remaining marinate mix with the cornflour.

Pour this mix into the beef and peppers. Cook it till it gets thickened.

Serve the pepper steak with its sweet and spicy gravy on the mashed potatoes.
